Security & privacy, explained simply
Here we explain, simply and clearly, how RemoteGuard handles your data. We deliberately promise nothing that isn’t technically true. Transparency matters more to us than marketing. The legally binding document is the privacy policy.
How does RemoteGuard protect my privacy from other users?
Your email address is never shown to anyone else, it’s only for your login and visible only in your own profile settings. Others see only your freely chosen username and a lock’s name.
Invitations work through an invite code you share yourself. You don’t need to know the other person’s email address and you don’t reveal your own.
Am I anonymous?
Yes, staying anonymous is possible, we deliberately built RemoteGuard that way. We require no real name and no phone number, and we don’t access your address book; to others you appear only under your username. How anonymous you stay in the end is up to you: it depends on the username you choose and the pictures and details you share. There is no advertising, no trackers, and we don’t sell data. To sign in we only need an email address, which no one else gets to see.
Who can see my data?
As a rule, only you can see your data. During a key handover the other person sees only what is needed for it, for example your username and profile picture.
We as the operator only see account information such as your username, email address and lock data. Passwords are stored only in an encrypted form that cannot be reversed, we cannot read them, and they stay unreadable even in the event of a data leak. Chat content such as texts and images is likewise not visible to us, because it is end-to-end encrypted.
Is my data encrypted?
- In transit: all connections between the app and the backend are encrypted via TLS/HTTPS.
- In storage: security-critical data such as the lock credentials and the emergency PIN are stored encrypted. Access is only possible through secured functions and is logged.
Are the lock credentials protected?
Yes. The lock credentials are created when you pair a lock with the app. They concern only the lock itself, i.e. the technical data used to control it via Bluetooth, and no personal content. They are stored encrypted on the server.
Unlike the chat, they are recoverable by design: if a device is lost or emergency access is needed, access to the lock has to be preserved. Access to them is tightly limited and logged.
Is the chat end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. Messages and photos in the chat are end-to-end encrypted. We as the operator can read neither texts nor images. Photos are additionally stored encrypted in private storage and can only be retrieved by the two participants of a share via time-limited links. Optionally you can set up a recovery key so a new device can read the old chat history.
And if someone misbehaves?
In the chat you can block people and report messages. Because the chat is end-to-end encrypted, an excerpt becomes visible for review only when you report it yourself. This also satisfies the app stores’ requirements for user-generated content.
Which permissions does the app need, and why?
- Bluetooth: to find and operate supported locks nearby.
- Push notifications: to let you know about requests, shares and important events.
- Camera / photos: only if you take or send a photo in the chat yourself.
No location or advertising data is collected through them.
How do I delete my account and data?
You can delete your account and data yourself at any time. Details on processing are in the privacy policy.
